Carbon Literacy - how can we help?

Bookkeeper Matt here to tell you a little about our focus on Sustainability in the practice.

Recently, Freya and I attended a two-day course on Carbon Literacy - looking to gain a deeper understanding of how the climate crisis is impacting businesses now, what the future might look like for our world, as well as the business world, and what potential opportunities there are to get ahead of the curve.

One of my key takeaways was on the impact we’re already seeing. Roughly a quarter of UK businesses are impacted in some way by extreme weather events. As the global temperature continues to rise, these are becoming more and more prevalent - and there’s risk there for businesses who aren’t prepared.

There’s a lot to consider in how your business might be affected by being part of someone else’s supply chain:

  • If you are requested to provide data on your carbon footprint, can you provide it?

  • Are you at risk of losing business due to one of your customers needing to go to a competitor who has this data - and is more focused on sustainability?

It’s not all bad news though…

There is clear opportunity here to be a standard bearer regarding sustainability in your sector. PwC report that 80% of consumers and employees are more likely to buy from or work for a company that has strong environmental principles.

Looking to attract young talent into your business? Nearly a third of Gen Z employees report having left a company due to a weak sustainability agenda.

Building a reputation as a 21st century business focused in this area can also open new opportunities with other like-minded businesses.

How can we help?

We love to make sense of numbers here - it’s what we do.

We are looking into a new service offering for our clients - Carbon Reporting.

Continued focus from the UK Government on Net Zero means we’re going to see more and more businesses required to accurately report on their emissions.

Some of the main issues businesses are going to face in this area include figuring out where the biggest impact areas are in their supply chain - and how to act on that info.

That’s where Carbon Reporting can help. Analysing data from your accounts to provide business owners with an accurate picture for both internal and external stakeholders. Once you know the numbers, you can start to plan for the future - something we’re all going to need to do more of over the next decade.

Thanks - and stay sustainable!
